  • We were on site for Sony's PlayStation 4 launch party in Auckland yesterday evening. Unlike Microsoft's open-to-the-public Xbox One launch, the PS4 event was strictly a guest-list affair.

  • The event took place at The Vault, a [literally] underground venue on Auckland's Fort Lane. Though it started off slowly, the space you see here was packed within the first couple of hours.

  • Attendees test out the PS4's camera-driven gameplay.

  • Playable displays showcased the PS1, PS2 (shown here) and PS3.

  • Attendees could win a 3D scanned version of themselves. Prop swords, guns and other items were available for winners to be scanned holding or posing with.

  • Previous 3D people-scanning setups we've seen have used Microsoft's Kinect SDK. Unsurprisingly, the setup at Sony's PS4 launch used an alternative camera.

  • Many of the PS4's big upcoming titles were on show. The event was R18, likely due to both the rating of some games, and the fact that alcohol was sponsored by Jäger.

  • Assassin's Creed IV was playable at multiple stations.

  • One attendee photographs the PS Vita used as a controller for Assassin's Creed on the PS4.

  • Popular Kiwi musician Che Fu performs at the launch event. Che Fu has often supported Sony's PlayStation range in the past.

  • By playing the games on show, attendees could go into the draw to win one of several PS4 units on the night. Unlike Microsoft's midnight launch for the Xbox One, PS4s or games could not be bought on site.
