Vodafone will offer its prepay customers a free upgrade to 4G/LTE mobile internet from 11 December.

A 4G-capable device is required, but "Vodafone Prepay customers don’t need to SIM-swap to access 4G – they simply reply “YES” to a TXT notification message to be upgraded to a 4G-capable plan", Vodafone said in a press-release.

The announcement came this afternoon, after Telecom NZ announced the launch of its own 4G service overnight in parts of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. Telecom NZ's offer includes users of its $19 and $29 prepay packs, without additional fees for the 4G upgrade.

Vodafone NZ has not previously offered 4G to its prepay customers. While previously it charged on-account customers an additional $10/month to upgrade from 3G to 4G connectivity, that charge was removed in October - 4G is available free to all Vodafone on-account and SIM-only customers.
