Intel’s 1.83GHz Core 2 Duo T5600 CPU is at the heart of the Aspire and this, along with 1GB or DDR2 dual channel memory, helped push the notebook to a top WorldBench 5 score of 101. Storage is handled by a 120GB hard drive that Acer splits right down the middle, providing two partitions – one for Windows and the other for data, a smart move in case you ever want to reinstall Windows without the hassle of having to separately back up all your data. A Super Multi double layer +R DVD burner occupies the optical drive bay, and there’s also a handy memory card reader for your digital photography needs.

Four USB ports are on offer (two on the back and two on the left-hand-side), along with an Ethernet port, 56K modem, headphone, mic and digital audio output. There’s also a built-in mic and 1.3 megapixel webcam, to cater for any kind of video calling. The 15.4-inch widescreen display is coated with a contrast-improving CrystalBrite layer and is driven by an Nvidia GeForce Go 7300 video chipset with 256MB of video RAM – perfect for running Windows Vista in all its Aero glory, should you decide to make the switch to Microsoft’s new operating system.

Bluetooth and 802.11b/g wireless round out the feature set, while the inclusion of Windows XP Media Centre Edition makes this notebook a well-priced winner for users who like to use their notebook as a portable entertainment centre.
