Sony Computer Entertainment's Santa Monica Studios has announced God of War: Ascension for PlayStation 3.
The game will include a multiplayer suite for the first time in the franchise's history, on top of a fully fledged single-player campaign.
A prequel to the core God of War trilogy, Ascension details the events that led series protagonist Kratos to eventually break free from his blood oath to the god Ares. It's understood to give a more personal insight into Kratos' motivations and the anger that has driven him throughout the series.
"Unlike previous releases, we're providing a deeper look into Kratos' tormented past and psyche that fans have not seen before," said Todd Papy, game director for God of War: Ascension at Santa Monica Studios.
"Combined with refined gameplay, jaw-dropping visuals and a fresh twist on competitive gaming with our new multiplayer mode, I guarantee that God of War: Ascension will give fans what they've been waiting for and much more."
The game's new multiplayer component was briefly demonstrated to media in Santa Monica last week in an eight-player, four-on-four game type called Team Execution.
The match saw two teams fight for control of two objectives, which enabled the successful team to slay a giant "Megalops" to earn favour from the gods.
God of War: Ascension is scheduled for release in 2013.
