The Elder Scrolls series will soon be expanding into the online space in the form of a massively multiplayer online RPG, Bethesda announced this morning.

The Elder Scrolls Online is the first game in the franchise that will have any multiplayer component whatsoever. It is being developed for both PC and Mac.

The game will not be developed by Skyrim creators Bethesda Softworks, however. Instead, Bethesda has enlisted the talents of ZeniMax Online Studios.

The game's director, Matt Firor, said that The Elder Scrolls Online's universe would be "epic".

“It will be extremely rewarding finally to unveil what we have been developing the last several years. The entire team is committed to creating the best MMO ever made – and one that is worthy of The Elder Scrolls franchise," said Firor.

More details are expected to be unveiled later this month in Game Informer.
