SCE announces Gran Turismo 6

In news that will shock approximately zero people, Sony Computer Entertainment today announced Gran Turismo 6 for the PlayStation 3.

The announcement was made at an event to celebrate the 15-year anniversary of the franchise.

“It is amazing to think that it is 15 years since we first released Gran Turismo,” said Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi. “Things have changed a lot since then and now Gran Turismo 6 is a further evolution of my dream.”

While Yamauchi only announced that the game would be available on the PS3, he left the door open for PS4 support.

“We’re pleased to deliver GT6 to PlayStation 3 as we have a very loyal community on that platform. However, we have refactored the game to make it very flexible and expandable, with a view to making many future developments,” he said.

It would be a surprise if the game didn't have PS4 support - GT6 will be released in the holiday period this year. A release that late in the year would line up nicely with the launch of the PS4.

Gran Turismo 6 will introduce “stunning” new cars and circuits, Sony Computer Entertainment said in a statement. The total number of cars avilable at launch will be 1,200, with more to be added through DLC.

There will be 33 tracks to race on in GT6, and 71 different layouts. Again, more will be added in time through DLC.

SCE also touted the game's improved connectivity with smartphones and tablets, saying there would be “increased social and community functions”.
