Sony's newest Android tablet, the Xperia Tablet Z, will be available in New Zealand on 6 June.

The tablets will be Wi-Fi-only. The 16GB model of the tablet will have a recommended retail price of $729, and the 32GB model $849. The 32GB version will be exclusive to Sony stores, while the 16GB version will be available from other local retailers.

The device is the world's thinnest 10.1-inch tablet at 6.9mm, Sony said in a press release, and weighs just under half a kilogram.

It has a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor with 2GB RAM, a 1920 x 1200 pixel display, and expandable storage up to 64GB via microSD. It has an 8MP rear-facing camera and a 2MP front-facing camera.

The Tablet Z is also IP55 and IP57 water resistant, meaning it can be immersed in three feet - about 90cm - of water for up to 30 minutes without being damaged. It's also dust proof.

The Tablet Z features DLNA and near-field communications for quick sharing between devices.

The device runs Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean).
