Google delays launch of some Google TV devices

Search engine asks some hardware manufacturers to stall launch

Google has asked some tech companies to delay launching products that feature its Google TV platform.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Google told hardware manufacturers the delay would allow the search engine to improve its software

Google's platform and allow users to search for and watch programmes both from the web and broadcasters, through their TV. Viewers will also be able to run specific applications to stream movies and TV shows from websites such as Amazon, and also browsing the web using Chrome and even listen to internet-radio stations via their TV.

Logitech and Sony have already unveiled devices running Google TV. Logitech's Revue set-top box can be connected to a TV, using an HDMI cable, and allows users can access TV shows and movies from a number of sources, including broadcasters, the web, apps and PCs, from their TV.

Meanwhile, Sony has unveiled a range of HD TVs that incorporate the same Google TV functionality in the device's electronics. The TVs, which range from 24in to 46in, allow users to access content via broadcast, the internet and applications. The Google TV navigation, on-screen menus and results screens mirror the features seen in the Revue. Neither device has been made available in the UK yet.

Google has yet to comment to the report.

Samsung told the newspaper it will continue with its plans to launch Google TV devices at the forthcoming International Consumer Electronics Show, which takes place in Las Vegas from January 6 to 9.
