Following our NAS roundup back in May, I’ve been keeping the Welland NetShare GX on the bottom of my review pile.

AT A GLANCE
  • FTP and SAMBA file sharing
  • iTunes server and BitTorrent client

Simple and cost-effective NAS solution for the home.

Editor's rating: 4

On the network side, the box supports direct access via FTP and SAMBA. Though the interface can be a little unintuitive, it’s reasonably simple to set up multiple accounts with access to specific folders on the drive. You can’t prioritise access or anything so complex, but it’s fine for the average home user.

The NetShare GX will happily act as an iTunes media server, and also features a BitTorrent client so you can download directly to the drive without having to leave a PC switched on all day and night. This is great if you’re using the drive to host Linux ISOs or other large free files, as you can just tell it what to download and let it do its thing.

The Netshare GX is priced well for a basic, no-nonsense NAS box. If you just need some shared storage and aren’t concerned about trusting your data to a single hard drive, it’s definitely a good option.
