Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 on its way

Samsung's new tablet, the Galaxy Tab 10.1, will launch in New Zealand in late March or April to compete with Apple's iPad 2.

It is one of several new mobile devices Samsung announced early this month.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 can play HD video in 1080p.

The 10.1, named after its 10.1-inch screen, will likely be Apple's only real competitor in the market for some time, although several other manufacturers are attempting to get their tablet products approved for New Zealand.

The tablet is slightly thicker, but lighter, than the iPad 2, and runs Android 3.0 (Honeycomb). It will be the first Android 3.0 tablet on sale in the country.

It has two cameras, a 2MP front-facing camera and an 8MP rear-facing lens.

The 10.1 runs on a 1GHz dual-core processor and 16GB of storage space. It has a 1280x800 display.

Key account manager at Samsung, Bruce Fowler, said the Galaxy Tab 10.1 would be more expensive than the iPad, but could not say what the device would cost.
