Auckland-based game developers Grinding Gear Games will be launching the closed beta of their first project, an online role-playing game called Path of Exile, on 10 August.

Gamers who are interested in taking part in the beta can sign up online and will be randomly selected to participate. Players will be continuously added in order to test the game's servers.

The beta includes the first two acts of the game and five character classes.

Grinding Gear Games have been working on Path of Exile for more than five years. The game is similar in genre and style to the Diablo series.

It will be free-to-play and supported by microtransactions, although producer and Grinding Gear founder Chris Wilson said it will not be a 'pay to win' game.

“We won’t be selling any form of power in the game, only aesthetic improvements, so if you’re fighting someone you know they earned their place the hard way," Wilson said.

Grinding Gear will also be visiting Seattle in August to show off the game at PAX Prime.
