The Cooler Master X6 CPU cooler is a multi-platform HSF (heatsink and fan) which is compatible with every current consumer desktop platform. It fits sockets LGA2011/1366/1156/1155/775 from Intel and sockets FM1/AM3+/AM3/AM2 from AMD.
The offset angle of the tower-shaped X6 is designed so that the intake side of the cooler is pointed directly towards the middle of the system case. This is typically where intake fans are placed, and it offers better access to cooler room-temperature air with which to cool the CPU.
Another unique feature is the honeycomb structure of the cooling fins – this is to increase the surface area of the fins for maximum heat dissipation. Combined with a copper base, six 6mm heat pipes and a 120mm PWM-controlled fan, on paper the X6 looks like a capable wee beast.
Installation of the X6 into my LGA1155 system had its ups and downs. It’s not as fiddly as some other coolers I’ve come across, but it does require you to have simultaneous access to both sides of your motherboard to install it: the screw-down bolts are located on the motherboard’s back plate, which is unusual. As a result, installation is almost a two-person job, but once mounted it was sturdily in place.
In testing, the X6 performed handsomely – almost as good as the more expensive Prolimatech Megahalems. At low speed (900RPM) the fan was inaudible, and at high speed (1600RPM) it was noticeable but quieter than Intel’s stock coolers.
